Positive Leadership: Crisis Leadership

In this presentation, Harvard Business School historian Nancy Koehn explores two examples of effective leadership in moments of great turbulence: Abraham Lincoln's presidency during the Civil War and Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton's leadership when his ship, the Endurance, became stuck in the ice in 1915 to 1916.

From these powerful stories, Koehn draws together several key lessons about individual leadership and its impact. She concludes by applying these insights to our own volatile, high-stakes moment today.

Graham and Positive Leadership were involved in the development of our annual Learning for Business Conference from the outset, helping to ensure that it met its professional training and development objectives. The conference was based around case studies and role plays, which asked the speakers to be insightful and flexible in terms of how they presented and interacted with the delegates, and Graham was both. The WS Society's Learning for Business Conference is aimed at young professionals looking to develop their business awareness and personal skills, and he was excellent at understanding the issues facing them in the current climate. During his session he provided guidance on how to develop these new skills and got the delegates to think about how they could take control of their professional development and begin making a difference to their organisations. Many of the more experienced practitioners and HR Managers who attended the event, commented that they would be taking on board some of his suggestions with regard to their own development.
